Summer is *ALMOST* here

i have summer on the brain.
it's invaded my thoughts since spring break
(just a mere one week to go)
you may be jealous of the break that teachers receive
you may think they are unnecessary or frivolous
but let me assure you,
there's no way we would ever
remain in this profession if we had to

teach all day without time for a potty break and
plan for two grades and
making every student feel special and
take extra reading classes and
attend training sessions on reading data and
attend meetings on the dismal future of education and
respond to irate parent emails about grades and
be smiley and ready to give that extra help all the time and
run after-school extracurricular clubs and
collect tickets at sports games and
run wyldlife and
a small group for girls and
give rides, advice, hugs, lectures, condolences, and praise

without a two-month break to
relax
recharge
reflect
rediscover
why we were called to teaching in the first place

to make up to our family and friends
for being MIA all those nights out
when we couldn't get up off the couch because
it was a school night

to get our traveling in
because it's frowned upon to take more than
one day off at a time
during the school year

to think about what we did
well (last year)
and what could be
better (next year)

it's just around the corner...
i can feel it in the buzzing excitement in the halls
hear it through the sound of the summer crickets' serenade
and i will squeeze the life out of every moment of
freedom
